Two gym visits this week, feeling the pain and taking it easy, only doing treadmill and rowing. Still not too keen on treadmill, feel very flat-footed on it and unsafe but persevering – facing the fear and dealing with it rather than hiding from it.
So tonight I did ten minutes on the treadmill – not a huge amount but better than the last few weeks! 2 at 6 kmh 6 at 5.5 kmh and 2 at 5 kmh, legs were screaming at me by the end and was sweating (Steve tells me that’s good!)
Then my favourite rower for some hiit. 3 minute warm up at 27 strokes per minute followed by eight sets of 30 second high (38 stroked per minute) and 60 seconds low (28 stroked per minute) – I enjoyed that session, but hip joints and bum hurt a bit. Those seats really need padding!
What I really need to get back to is this:-
So tonight’s little session was very short. I worked late then visited Mum, had a chat cooked her dinner, made her eat!
Got home at about seven thirty, got changed and off I went, without my Polar Link, which has disappeared.
I was going to try to run up a killer hill, I walked it last week at a slow pace for one mile, was very hard going.
Off I went on a slow run, calves screaming for me to stop, breath coming in gasps (it had gotten colder today), so the intention to run one mile up a very steep hill foundered very quickly. Fartlek it!
So then I ran between lamp posts, driveways, short medium runs until I was halfway up the hill, in the pitch black and feeling very very very tired. Decided on common sense as opposed to heroics and ran back down.
It was a light-bulb moment but I had not yet seen it!

Wow I feel great, I am sort of following the rules now, increase by 10% on last weeks workout/s.
Last Sunday was 5.2 miles of ralking (run/walk) so this Sunday needed to be 5.2 plus 0.52 = 5.72 pretty close to 10k. I think might as well do the extra little bit …. …….
My PB for a 5k was 50:05 at Llyn Llech Owain in a Parkrun event.
Today, at Mynydd Mawr, I did 5k in 45:04 (the course is flatter and less stony, about 80% tarmac, very much easier). I ran all the downhill bits and walked as fast as possible in between. There was 1.53 miles of running and 1.61 miles of walking in the 5k. Was feeling good, enjoying myself, very pleased with the time. So off I go for the 10% increase from last week, not much left to do.
I ended up doing 10k and managed to run most of the downhill bits, my end time was 1:37:37 for the 10k I was very very pleased with that. Overall today I have run for a total of 3.01 miles.
Now all I have to do is do it all together without the walking at Llyn Llech Owain!
Apparently my haphazard training has a name – Fartlek – this comes from Sweden and I love it, did that on Wednesday and did some hill running intervals tonight. I promised Steve that I would do a Parkrun (properly) in September so am sort of training for that,
I am enjoying the testing of my body and spirit, and exploring the different types of training and running that there are, great fun indeed and a good sense of achievement.
