The beach experience ~TJ105

So, yesterday was to be a day for me to sort out my head, do some training and so on. Love the countryside and woods etc., but fancied a change so I took myself off to my local old-fashioned seaside village. There is a proper level crossing, with a nice man in the booth who often hangs out the window for a chat!

There are toilets, a restaurant, a seaside shop, a pub, a yacht club, a lifeboat station (not RNLI) and several churches in the village, it is decidedly ‘quaint’ and one of my favourite places to visit. The scenery is unspoilt and varies from sandy beaches, to rocks and a sort of marshland.

Above is the marshy type sand where the seabirds seem to gather in numbers, I assume the huge rocks have been placed there by man as a sea defence, the sea comes all the way in.

Then the sandy part of the beach, the sand is not ‘sand’ coloured, it is more of a cream colour. In places quite boggy and easy to sink into. There are cockle beds with fishing rights given to some families for generations back.

My day was split into two parts, the first a ralk session, and I had initially to run into the wind, I met a fellow runner and he said it was lovely when you turned around and the wind was behind you! There was no set programme for the ralk, just do what felt right, avoid injury and enjoy. I did about 2.5 miles like this in around 50 minutes or so. Running on sand, even hard packed wet sand, is very different from woods and tarmac!

The second half of my day was more to just enjoy being in the open, the sea ‘breeze’ – more like a force nine gale!

I love the ripple effect on the sand, very decptive, tried loads of times to get a shadow image of my wild hair – not very successfully, but not that bad.

So I strolled around the beach, took photos, sat and watched the water, listened to the wind, collected some stones and generally felt refreshed and at one with the owrld.

All in all a lovely day, dry, windy, raw nature, walked and/or ran for five miles.

Bonza day ~TJ104

I had a really good day today. AND I even followed suggestions from he who gives instructions, suggestions and great advice (which I ignore from time to time he he he )

Lead the walking group and one of the walkers had a great achievement she walked 2.34 miles today! Her first walk on 14th September was 0.25 miles. We celebrated with hot chocolates in the park cafe.

When that all finished I went for a run round the Parkrun route, when I say run I mean of course, ralk – run/walk. I went from finish line to finish line, there was no goal for pace, time, anything – just do it was the advice, so now we have a baseline figure to build on.

While walking around I was conscious of the beauty all around me, autumn is my favourite season, I love the colours and you can see the character of the trees when they are bare of leaves.

Temper tantrum ~TJ85

I admit it – I had a major tantrum this morning. Every day since starting this lifestyle change with Steve I have got up, had a wee and waited for……… no delicate way to put it lol – waste disposal!

After this I strip off and weigh and measure, this is usually an exciting process because mostly the weight is down or stable and the fat mass is down and muscle mass up – as a general trend – not every single day.

This morning, after a great run yesterday, which was followed by a mile and a quarter walk with a walking group, (links below) I did the usual. To my absolute and abject horror I had gained nearly 2 kilos – almost 4 pounds. I went from 0 – ballistic in nanoseconds, there were tears, much foul language and general noise and ranting. I sent poor Steve an e-mail full of depression, anger and hurt.

Some while later I realised that it was the repair crews and nanobots in to fix my muscles after all the damage I did yesterday – whoops. I got an e-mail from Steve telling me so at about the same time that I realised. By this time I had skipped breakfast and lunch in an attempt to fast for 24 hours to shift the weight or water or whatever evil thing had invaded my body.

All this of course relates beautifully to the chimp thing.

When Steve first started to explain the mechanics of diet, exercise, nutrition and brain to me, he told me about the reptilian instinctive brain that controls all the basic stuff and is about survival. I knew of this from before but now for some reason it resonated and I found Lizzie – my inner lizard. She and I chat sometimes about how I want it to be! Well chat is maybe not the right word, it’s more me telling her to do stuff to help me. Sounds daft, but when I am running and I can’t get my breath or the burning starts in the legs I tell her I have to run or we will not survive (then I make up some rubbish about being chased by something), maybe it is the simple act of NOT thinking about the issue that stops it becoming a problem. I don’t care what it is but it works for me.

So, after Lizzie was ‘born’, further explanations followed about how the body tears muscle when exercising and then it all gets repaired, and it is better and stronger after the repairs. Being me I imagined nanobots and lizards doing the work and that is what Steve and I now call it 🙂

I went so far as to have a drawing of calf muscle repairs done to illustrate to Steve what I felt was happening – how I perceived his scientific explanation. I like it as just a picture but it is very symbolic of my journey. I had it done on five squids (link below) by a very talented man called Pixomanic.

Was having a great week, losing weight, improving the running, mum getting a bit better, kids all settled, Steve back from his break. Too good to be true of course! So..

  • I didn’t get the new job I was after
  • Son needed to be home early so I couldn’t go to the gym
  • Someone blocked the dog flap so they left me ‘messages’

Am fed up – but I will bounce back – I always do just felt like having a moan. That’s what a blog is for I think – an online public diary.

Fartlek – I love it ~TJ62

Apparently my haphazard training has a name – Fartlek – this comes from Sweden and I love it, did that on Wednesday and did some hill running intervals tonight. I promised Steve that I would do a Parkrun (properly) in September so am sort of training for that,

I am enjoying the testing of my body and spirit, and exploring the different types of training and running that there are, great fun indeed and a good sense of achievement.
